Sometimes you want to combine work and vacation, and what better for a mountain person than a trip into nature. So I closed my laptop, laced up my hiking boots, and drove to Liguria. Sun, mountains, sea – everything perfect. At least until the first encounter with the smallest and most annoying inhabitants of the region: Pappataci, sand flies, and tiger mosquitoes.

Liguria – beautiful, but in the olive grove, tiny creatures lurk that pack a punch. I admit it: I underestimated the enemy. A little insect repellent and all would be quiet – I thought. The reality was different. After the first evening, I was covered in red dots on my legs. Every bite itched so intensely that I could hardly sleep at night. The next morning, I looked as if I had lost an unfair duel against a dozen mosquitoes.

Sand Flies, also called Pappataci

Sand flies, called Pappataci in Italy, are tiny and almost invisible. That's exactly what makes them so dangerous. They fly silently, land unnoticed, and bite mercilessly. They particularly like to attack ankles and calves – precisely where one is most vulnerable in summer clothing. Their bite itches severely and can last for days. It becomes even more serious when you consider that sand flies can transmit diseases like leishmaniasis.

Tiger Mosquitoes – now a threat in our region too

The Asian tiger mosquito has spread across Southern Europe in recent years. Its black and white striped pattern makes it easily recognizable. It bites not only in the evening but also during the day. Besides its aggressive behavior, the potential diseases it can transmit are particularly problematic – including dengue and chikungunya. This makes tiger mosquitoes a serious threat to travelers.

Other Pests

In addition to mosquitoes, there are other nuisances during outdoor vacations in the Mediterranean that can make staying in nature difficult. Ticks, in particular, are widespread in forests and tall grasses and can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease or TBE.

Fleas mainly appear where stray animals are present, causing itchy bites on legs and ankles. Horseflies are active during the day, painful when they bite, and difficult to repel.

Wasps and hornets are also common companions that can be annoying near the coast and at picnics. In some regions, certain ant species can also be very aggressive and trigger sensitive skin reactions.

Clothing as the Most Important Barrier

After a few days in Liguria, it was clear: no chance without long clothing. Insect repellents are useful, but clothing remains the most reliable protection. With the right combination, I could finally sit outside in the evenings again without feeling like I was voluntarily offering myself as a buffet.

Long-Sleeved Tops and Pants

The more fabric, the better. Thin, long-sleeved shirts and airy pants are ideal in summer. Especially in the evenings, when sand flies become active, long sleeves and pants are essential.

Tightly Woven Materials

Mosquitoes can easily bite through loose cotton. Tightly woven fabrics like high-density nylon or linen with a tight weave offer reliable protection. Modern outdoor materials are also breathable and comfortable to wear.

Loose Fit

Tight clothing lies directly on the skin and allows bites through the fabric. Loose cuts create distance between the material and the skin, making attacks more difficult.

Light Colors

Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. Light colors like white, beige, or pastels are less conspicuous and significantly reduce their attraction. Especially in hot regions, light clothing is more comfortable anyway.

Outdoor Clothing with Extra Protection

In any case, I wouldn't want to be without jackets, hoodies, and long pants. Especially not during dusk or early morning.

Clothing is the foundation, but additional measures make life much more pleasant.

Repellents

On exposed skin, repellents are indispensable. Products with Icaridin or DEET work reliably but should be reapplied regularly – especially after swimming or sweating.

Mosquito Coils

Coils emit active ingredients like Allethrin. They create a zone of one to two meters where mosquitoes are significantly less active. Ideal for terraces or balconies, but only for outdoor use.

Portable Devices

Thermacell devices or similar systems create a protective zone of about 20 square meters. Perfect for evenings outdoors or camping.

Plug-in Vaporizers

For indoors, vaporizer devices are practical. They release active ingredients like Transfluthrin and keep mosquitoes away. Good ventilation and correct use according to instructions are important.

Mosquito Nets

At night, nets over the bed are essential. For sand flies, the mesh size should be particularly fine so that the tiny insects cannot slip through.

Fans

An airflow disrupts mosquitoes when they approach. At the same time, it swirls the carbon dioxide that makes us so attractive to these creatures. Fans are a simple but very effective addition.

Insect Screens on Windows

Fine-mesh screens on windows and doors prevent mosquitoes from even entering the room. Especially in coastal regions like Liguria, this is a must.

Avoid Standing Water

Even small accumulations of water are enough for tiger mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Saucers, flower pots, or rain gutters should be regularly checked and emptied.

Behavioral Tips

Sand flies are particularly active at dusk. In the evening, it's therefore important to wear long clothing and not sit directly next to bushes or damp areas. Tiger mosquitoes are active during the day. Breaks in windy areas or sunny spots are therefore more pleasant.

First Aid for Bites

If, despite all measures, a – or as you can see here, numerous – bites occur, immediate cooling with water or ice helps. I was told that antihistamine gels relieve itching. Mild cortisone creams could be used for strong reactions, I was also told. It is important not to scratch – even if it is difficult. Open wounds can become inflamed and worsen the discomfort.

A practical aid on vacation are so-called bite healers. These small devices work with concentrated heat that briefly acts on the affected skin area. The heat destroys the protein structures in the insect's saliva, significantly reducing itching and swelling.

The advantage: bite healers do not use any chemicals, making them suitable for people with sensitive skin. Many models are battery-operated or can be charged via USB, so they easily fit into a backpack.

It is important to apply the device as soon as possible after the bite, as the effect is greatest then. For frequent travelers or outdoor enthusiasts in the Mediterranean, bite healers are therefore a useful addition to the first-aid kit.

My Conclusion from Liguria

My days in Liguria were a lesson that mosquitoes are much more persistent than I thought. Only with the right clothing – long pants, light shirts, closed shoes – could I truly enjoy the evenings.
