Feel & Haptics in direct comparison
This is the difference that cannot be shown in a table – but which is immediately noticeable the first time you put it on.

Merino CloudBlend:
The shirt feels cool to the touch. Not cold – but noticeably fresher than other shirts at body temperature. TENCEL™ Lyocell has a smoother fiber structure than wool and creates precisely this cooling effect on the skin. The feel is silky, light, almost floating. Those familiar with high-quality viscose or modal shirts will immediately feel comfortable – with the difference that CloudBlend is also temperature-regulating and odor-neutral.

Merino Essential:
The shirt feels more substantial. Denser, warmer to the touch, with the unmistakable natural feel of merino wool. This is not a disadvantage – for many, it is precisely what they expect from a merino shirt. The wearing experience is familiar, grounded, solid. Those who know and love merino will recognize the Essential for what it is: real merino, without compromise.
The verdict on feel
If you prefer a cooler, more modern feel → CloudBlend.
If you're looking for the classic, full-bodied merino feel → Essential.
Activity & Use – when is which shirt the better choice?
Hiking & multi-day treks
The stronger shirt on demanding, sweaty hikes: TENCEL™ wicks moisture faster and dries quickly – ideal for hut-to-hut trekking and alpine tours.
Everything you need for moderate hikes and walks – tougher under a backpack and the more affordable way into merino hiking.
Mountaineering & climbing
A base layer for via ferratas and alpine terrain: elastane gives full freedom of movement, quick drying keeps you comfortable under high exertion.
The longer-lasting choice under a harness or backpack – polyamide protects the friction points.
Travelling light
Dry overnight on a hook, cool in warm regions and light in your luggage – the shirt for several days in a row.
Just as odour-resistant and temperature-regulating, dries a little more slowly but is tougher – the more affordable choice for temperate climates.
Everyday & work
Pleasantly cooling – ideal if you warm up quickly or work in heated offices. Looks smart and still smells fresh in the evening.
The reliable everyday shirt for the office and the city: tougher, more classic in look and feel, and easy to care for.
Sport & fitness
The more functional shirt for trail running, yoga or cycling: elastane stretch, quick drying, no flapping.
Not made for intense sport, but ideal after a workout or for light outdoor activities.
Women vs. Men - Cut, Fit & Sizes

Care – the same basic rules apply to both shirts
As both versions contain merino wool, caring for them is almost identical. A few simple rules will significantly extend their lifespan.
Gentle cycle at max. 30 °C
Use the wool programme with a wool detergent or a mild delicates detergent. No fabric softener, no enzymes – these damage the merino fibre in the long run.
Dry flat, never in the tumble dryer
Spread it out on a drying rack – don't hang it by the shoulders, as the shirt may lose its shape.
Not necessary
Merino wool smooths itself out as you wear it. No need for an iron – the fibre takes care of it.
The secret to a long life
Merino barely absorbs odours. In most cases, simply airing it out after wearing is all it needs – saving washes, protecting the fibres and extending its lifespan.
One small difference: Thanks to its polyamide content, the Essential shirt is a little more forgiving of care mistakes. The CloudBlend, with TENCEL™ and elastane, needs a little more care – especially when drying and choosing a detergent.
FAQs
Which shirt is cheaper?
The Essential. By foregoing TENCEL™ Lyocell as a premium fiber, the Essential is more affordably priced than the CloudBlend – while maintaining identical sustainability standards and production quality.
Can I wear both shirts as a base layer?
Yes, both are suitable as a base layer under fleece, softshell, and hardshell jackets. The CloudBlend wicks moisture away faster and offers more stretch for freedom of movement. The Essential is more robust as a base layer under backpack straps and climbing harnesses.
Which shirt is warmer?
The Essential, due to its higher wool content (85%). The CloudBlend, with TENCEL™, is more geared towards cooling – it warms in the cold, but less intensely than a shirt with such a high wool content. In winter or at very low temperatures, the Essential is the warmer choice as a standalone top.
Which shirt lasts longer?
The Essential. The polyamide content significantly increases abrasion resistance and shape retention. In areas of friction – collar, shoulders, under backpack straps – the Essential shows significantly less wear than the CloudBlend. If you want to use a shirt intensively for years, the Essential is the better choice.
Do either of the two shirts scratch the skin?
No. Both shirts use merino wool with a fibre fineness that even sensitive skin finds comfortable – CloudBlend with 16.5 μm (Superfine), Essential with 18.5 μm. Due to its TENCEL™ content, the CloudBlend even has an even cooler, softer feel on the skin. A scratching sensation occurs with wool qualities above 25 μm – far from both BERGMENSCH® variants.
What is the main difference between CloudBlend and Essential?
The fabric blend and feel. CloudBlend combines Merino (56%, 16.5μm) with TENCEL™ Lyocell (37%) and Elastane (7%) – it's softer, cooler, dries faster, and has more stretch. The Essential is made from 85% Merino (18.5μm) and 15% Polyamide – it has a more classic Merino feel, is more robust and durable. Both are breathable, temperature-regulating, odor-neutral, and mulesing-free.
Which shirt is better for hiking?
That depends on the intensity. For demanding, sweat-inducing tours, the CloudBlend is the stronger choice due to its quick drying time and active cooling effect. For moderate hikes and tours where robustness and durability are more important than high-performance drying, the Essential is the more solid decision.
Which shirt is better for travel?
The CloudBlend has a clear advantage when handwashing and quickly refreshing on the go due to its fast drying time. The Essential is also very suitable for travel – especially in temperate climates where the slightly slower drying time is not an issue.
Can I buy both?
Absolutely – and many mountain people do exactly that. The CloudBlend as a performance shirt for intensive tours and travels, the Essential as a robust everyday and outdoor shirt for all other days. Both complement each other, hardly overlap, and together cover almost all wearing situations.
