You are amazing – thanks to you, we were able to build 7 wells in the slums of Kolkata. But first, let's take a few steps back – what did we do and why is it good to engage with the suffering of people in other countries? There are numerous aid organizations, but we only wanted to donate where we knew that the money would truly go where it was urgently needed.

In South Tyrol, we met the wonderful Petra Theiner and her organization "Hope for a Better Tomorrow" – the volunteer organization helps people in India achieve a better life.

The idea behind our "10,000 Steps Challenge": Move and help raise money for the people in Kolkata. #bergmenschmoves

Goal of the Challenge – what did we want to achieve?

This year, in May, we launched the 10,000 Steps Challenge – a perfect option to help the people in the slums of Kolkata. The goal was to donate money to build wells there. The locals in the slums usually do not have access to clean water. That's why it's all the more important for us, together with you, to do something good.

The full interview with Petra Theiner - Why is it so important to help?

How did it work?

Exercise is healthy, and so we thought of combining both components. For every 10,000 steps taken per day, we donated one euro. The maximum amount to be reached was set at 10,000 euros.

Already on day 12, we reached the mark together with all the brave and active participants. Nevertheless, we let the challenge run until the end of May 2021, and you walked twice as many steps – amazing! We then added another €1,000.

Additionally, the net profits from the sales of the participant T-shirts also flowed into the donation pot.

The impressive results of our Challenge: Facts, figures, and data

This is what we achieved – we are overwhelmed by what great goals can be reached together:

  • An amount of 15,410 euros was donated. This mark was achieved through the steps walked plus the profit generated from T-shirt sales.
  • We were able to lay the foundation for building seven wells.
  • Through the construction of the wells, over 3,000 people gained access to clean drinking water.
  • A total of 2,740 people actively participated.
  • We achieved a performance of over 328,000,000 steps. That's incredible. In other words: We walked around the world 5.3 times.
  • We also burned the calories of approx. 164,000 scoops of strawberry ice cream. What an achievement.

Conclusion!

We are proud to have launched this project – but even more, we are grateful to you, all those people who wanted to do good with their steps. Thanks to everyone who helped support Petra's "Hope for a Better Tomorrow" campaign in Kolkata. We are already looking forward to the next challenge – together we can make the world a little bit better. Thank you.
