For 17 years, Petra Theiner (hotel manager) from Prad am Stilfserjoch / South Tyrol has been dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor in Kolkata.

She has been there many times herself to help. Three years ago, she founded her own association "Hope for a Better Tomorrow".

It is hope that gives her the strength to fight for the poorest. The aim of the association is to support local people so that they can stay in their homeland. Therefore, the association builds schools, drills deep wells, builds water tanks, and takes care of medical supplies for the poorest. With the help of donors, she has already been able to finance two ambulances for this purpose. The association also supports a home for the disabled, where over 30 severely disabled children live. Even today, people with disabilities sometimes have no place in society. They are often simply mercilessly eliminated.

A special project for seamstresses, a senior citizen project, and the establishment of a community center have all been made possible by donations.

The largest landfill in Kolkata presented Petra with an image of utter despair. Access to the landfills was denied to her for many years, but one day she managed to gain access to help the people living there. Thousands of people share the space with dogs, rats, and wild animals. They search with bare hands for anything that the metropolis of Kolkata throws away. With the support of donations, the association has already been able to build 20 clean toilets for the people there. In addition, after many years, a connection to the drinking water pipeline could be laid.

Kolkata officially has 15 million inhabitants, but another 10 million are not registered. They have no birth certificate and therefore do not exist.

Only one thing matters, "To satisfy hunger today, tomorrow is a new day." Thanks to donations, many children have already been taken from the landfills and sent to school. Attending school is a stepping stone to a better future.

As soon as Corona allows, a village for the poorest of the poor will be built, named "Hope for a Better Tomorrow."
