Care – simple, when you know how
Merino wool is easier to care for than its reputation suggests – the polyamide content also makes the Essential Shirt a little more robust than a pure merino shirt.
The four basic rules: Gentle cycle or wool program at a maximum of 30 °C. Wool detergent or mild fine detergent – no fabric softener, no enzymes, as these can damage the merino fiber in the long term. Do not tumble dry – dry flat on a clothes horse, do not hang by the shoulders. Ironing is not necessary; merino wool smooths itself out when worn.
Practical tip: Air briefly after wearing instead of washing immediately. Merino hardly absorbs odors – in many cases, airing overnight is completely sufficient. This significantly reduces washes, protects the fibers, and noticeably extends the shirt's lifespan.

What are the advantages of merino over cotton for sports?
Cotton absorbs sweat but hardly releases it – this leads to the familiar cold, clammy feeling after physical exertion and significantly increases the cooling effect in the wind. Merino wool absorbs moisture without feeling wet, wicks it away, and actively regulates body temperature. For outdoor activities and all situations where sweat and temperature changes play a role, merino is clearly superior to cotton.
What is mulesing-free merino wool?
Mulesing is a painful surgical procedure in sheep farming that is still widespread in countries such as Australia. Mulesing-free wool is produced without this procedure, under animal welfare-friendly conditions. BERGMENSCH® exclusively sources mulesing-free wool – because responsible treatment of animals is non-negotiable.

Will the shirt shrink when washed?
Not with proper care. Cold delicate wash, no tumble dryer, dry flat – then the shirt will keep its shape. The polyamide content makes it more durable than a pure merino shirt. No fabric softener, no high-speed spinning, do not hang when wet.
Can the Merino Essential Shirt also be worn in summer?
Yes. Merino wool can be used all year round. In summer, it prevents the sticky, overheating feeling of cotton and wicks away sweat more efficiently than synthetics. Can the Essential Shirt be worn as a base layer?
Yes – the Essential Shirt is also a very good choice as a baselayer. It lies directly on the skin, wicks moisture outwards, and actively regulates body temperature. The straight cut lies flat under jackets. Due to its polyamide content, it is more robust than the CloudBlend Shirt in areas of friction – such as under backpack straps or climbing harnesses.
How often do merino wool shirts need to be washed?
Significantly less frequent than with a cotton or synthetic shirt. After wearing, briefly airing it out is usually sufficient – merino wool hardly absorbs odors. For normal everyday use, washing once a week or less is perfectly adequate. On multi-week trekking tours, the shirt can be worn for several days straight.
What activities is the shirt suitable for?

Yes. At 18.5 micrometers, the merino wool used is in a range that is also perceived as pleasant by sensitive skin. Scratchy wool is a phenomenon of inferior, coarse fibers over 25 micrometers – this does not occur with merino wool of this quality. Anyone who has found wool uncomfortable in the past has probably worn standard wool, not Superfine Merino.

The Essential Shirt consists of 85% merino wool (18.5 μm) and 15% polyamide – classic merino feel, high durability, strong value for money.
