All measurements are garment measurements, taken flat in cm. Chest circumference = chest width × 2.
How to measure: A (chest width) = measured straight across 1 cm below the armpit, single width – not circumference. B (length) = from the collar seam to the hem. The cut is straight – a classic men's fit, not tapered. Length increases by 2 cm per size, chest width by approx. 2–3 cm. If you're between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Example guide: Chest circumference 100–104 cm → size M. Chest circumference 105–109 cm → size L.

Care – simple, when you know how
Merino wool is easier to care for than its reputation suggests – the polyamide content also makes the Essential Shirt a little more resilient than a pure merino shirt.
The four basic rules: Gentle or wool cycle at max. 30 °C. Wool detergent or a mild delicates detergent – no fabric softener, no enzymes, as these damage the merino fibre in the long run. Do not tumble dry – dry flat on a drying rack, do not hang by the shoulders. Ironing is not necessary; merino wool smooths itself out as you wear it.
Tip from experience: Air the shirt briefly after wearing instead of washing it straight away. Merino hardly absorbs odours – in many cases one night of airing is completely sufficient. This considerably reduces the number of washes, protects the fibres and noticeably extends the life of the shirt.

Is the Merino shirt suitable for vegans?
Merino wool is a natural animal product and not vegan. However, the wool comes from mulesing-free, animal-friendly husbandry. Those who prefer a purely plant-based functional option will find an alternative in the BERGMENSCH® drirelease® Active Wear collection.
What are the advantages of merino over cotton for sports?
Cotton absorbs sweat but hardly releases it – this leads to the familiar cold, clammy feeling after physical exertion and significantly increases the cooling effect in the wind. Merino wool absorbs moisture without feeling wet, wicks it away, and actively regulates body temperature. For outdoor activities and all situations where sweat and temperature changes play a role, merino is clearly superior to cotton.
What is mulesing-free merino wool?
Mulesing is a painful surgical procedure in sheep farming that is still widespread in countries such as Australia. Mulesing-free wool is produced without this procedure, under animal welfare-friendly conditions. BERGMENSCH® exclusively sources mulesing-free wool – because responsible treatment of animals is non-negotiable.
Where is the BERGMENSCH® Merino Shirt produced?

Will the shirt shrink when washed?
Not with proper care. Cold delicate wash, no tumble dryer, dry flat – then the shirt will keep its shape. The polyamide content makes it more durable than a pure merino shirt. No fabric softener, no high-speed spinning, do not hang when wet.
Can the Merino Essential Shirt also be worn in summer?
Yes. Merino wool can be used all year round. In summer, it prevents the sticky, overheating feeling of cotton and wicks away sweat more efficiently than synthetics. In extreme heat, CloudBlend with TENCEL™ is the cooler option – but the Essential is perfectly suited for active mountain summer days and transitional seasons.
Can the Essential Shirt be worn as a base layer?
Yes – the Essential Shirt is also a very good choice as a baselayer. It lies directly on the skin, wicks moisture outwards, and actively regulates body temperature. The straight cut lies flat under jackets. Due to its polyamide content, it is more robust than the CloudBlend Shirt in areas of friction – such as under backpack straps or climbing harnesses.
How often do merino wool shirts need to be washed?
Significantly less frequent than with a cotton or synthetic shirt. After wearing, briefly airing it out is usually sufficient – merino wool hardly absorbs odors. For normal everyday use, washing once a week or less is perfectly adequate. On multi-week trekking tours, the shirt can be worn for several days straight.
What activities is the shirt suitable for?
Hiking, trekking, mountaineering, via ferratas, everyday wear, travel, and leisure. It performs just as well as a base layer under fleece, softshell, and hardshell jackets as it does as a stand-alone top. Thanks to its polyamide content, it is particularly suitable for frequently used outdoor activities and multi-day tours.
Is the Merino Essential Shirt also suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. At 18.5 micrometers, the merino wool used is in a range that is also perceived as pleasant by sensitive skin. Scratchy wool is a phenomenon of inferior, coarse fibers over 25 micrometers – this does not occur with merino wool of this quality. Anyone who has found wool uncomfortable in the past has probably worn standard wool, not Superfine Merino.
What distinguishes the Men's Merino Essential Shirt from the CloudBlend Shirt?
The Essential Shirt consists of 85% merino wool (18.5 μm) and 15% polyamide – classic merino feel, high durability, strong value for money. The CloudBlend Shirt contains 56% merino wool, 37% TENCEL™ Lyocell and 7% elastane – it is softer, cools more effectively and dries faster, but is more delicate and higher priced. Essential is suitable for anyone who prioritizes maximum wool content, longevity and a classic merino feel. CloudBlend is for those who prioritize drying speed and a particularly soft feel.
How do I choose the right size?
